Rankin Burchfield, Jr. Obituary

On October 28, 1930 a son Rankin Jr. was born to Rankin Burchfield Sr. and Violet Phillips Burchfield.

He passed away on August 20, 2019 at the age of 88. Rankin joined the U.S. Army in 1951, serving 2 tours in Korea, two tours in Vietnam, Germany, and Belgium Congo along with his stateside assignments. He retired March 1974 after 22 years of service.

He was awarded two Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Metal, Combat Infantryman Badge, and numerous other metals.

Rankin was a member of First Baptist Church Oneida since June 1974, the Oneida Masonic Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and Disabled American Veterans.

Rankin enjoyed his bird hunting, fishing, and canoeing the rivers with his friend “Lost” John Jeffers, and special friends Benji Rector and Jerry Willard Thompson.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters Alene and Sue, and nephew Billy.

He is survived by his wife Rella Hatfield Burchfield of 63 years; sons Jim Burchfield and wife Diane, Scott Burchfield and wife Bridgett, and daughter Jane Shoopman and husband Stokely; brother Gary Burchfield and wife Kathy; grandchildren: Brandon Coffey and wife Ashley, Alex Coffey, Zachary Daniels, Kalah Barrett and husband Josh, Shelby Potter and husband Robert, Zane Kidd, and Abby Young and husband Adam; 11 great grandchildren; nephews Terry Burress and Joe Burchfield; niece; Sherry Phillips; many other relatives and friends. 

Friends may visit with the Burchfield family on Saturday, August 24, 2019 from 5 pm until the time of the service at 8 pm at the First Baptist Church of Oneida with Bro.  Randy Pressnell officiating.  Music will be provided by the First Baptist Church choir.

Committal service will be Sunday, August 25, 2019 at 12:30 pm at Carson Memorial Park with full Military Honors provided by the American Legion Post #136 of Oneida.
