Carmel McDuffie Thomas Purdy Obituary

Carmel McDuffie Thomas Purdy, age 86 of Glenmary, Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at Life Care Center of Morgan County.

She was born on December 1, 1933 in Cameron, North Carolina. A small little town near Fort Bragg Army Base where she met and married Elmer Eugene Purdy an Army Ranger and paratrooper who was serving in the 82 Airborne. Carmel used to laugh and say “Gene fell from the sky and I caught him”. She was a wife and mother of three. She was member of the First Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Tennessee, clerk of session, Sunday school teacher, & choir member for a number of years. In later years as Gene’s health declined they begin going to Barton Chapel in Robbins, Tennessee. It was closer to home and eased the burden of travel. They made several new friends there. Carmel liked to cook, sports, hiking, and loved taking care of animals, especially dogs. She believed in education & reading and served on the Oneida Library Board as clerk for many years.

Carmel was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Eugen Purdy (2009), son, Rahn Elmer Purdy of Cleveland, Tennessee (2010), her parents, Oscar & Marian Thomas of North Carolina, and her brother, Stedman Thomas of North Carolina.

She is survived by her daughter & son-in-law, Jill and Randall Jarnigan, of Glenmary, Tennessee, sister Doris Blue, of Southern Pines, North Carolina, grandchildren: Asha Jarnigan, of Glenmary, Tennessee, Adam & Rebecca Terry of Rocky Face, Georgia, Amanda Purdy of Georgia, Ty Sheffield of Asheboro, North Carolina, Anne Sheffield, of Chesapeake, Maryland, and several great-grandkids, nieces, nephews & friends.

First Presbyterian Church of Huntsville will host a virtual celebration of life service on Facebook and YouTube. Her ashes will be put in the Purdy Jarnigan Memorial Gardens at a later date.
