Obituary
Charles ‘Russell’ Phillips, age 91 of Helenwood, TN, passed away on Saturday, January 21, 2023, at the Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville, TN. Born March 18, 1931, he was the son of the late Tom and Cordelia Phillips. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp, and a member of the Helenwood Baptist Church. He had a great love for his church family and enjoyed many years of worship and fellowship there.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister: Bonnie Foster; brother: Mendle Phillips; and 2 infant siblings: Freda and Thomas Phillips, Jr.; sisters and brothers-in-law: Bertie Garrett Chambers and husband Ralph, Beatrice Garrett Lewallen and husband Junior, and Roy Garrett; father and mother-in-law: Omar and Effie Collins Garrett.
Russell is survived by his wife of 68 years: Zelma Phillips; children: Allen (Kathy) Phillips of Helenwood, and Terri (Dwight) Murphy of Winfield; six grandchildren: Ashlee (Chris) Tabor of Ohio, Jordan (Matt) Sims, and Blake (Gracie) Murphy, all of Winfield; Erika (Brian) Bradley of Knoxville; Cole Murphy of Atlanta, GA, and Melanie (Cody) Laverdiere of Knoxville; fourteen great grandchildren; sister-in-law: Elsie Phillips of Ore City, TX; three special nieces: Connie Phillps, Leslie Phillips, and Linda Barton; special friend: O. B. Cotton; many nieces, nephews and a host of other family members and friends.
Friends may visit with the Phillips family on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. until time of funeral service at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Jones & Son Funeral Home with Bro. Kevin Sexton and Bro. Jason Laxton officiating. Music will be provided by: Lloyd and Arnold Stephens, and Greta Laxton.
Committal service will be held on Wednesday, January 25, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. in the Daniel Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Chris Tabor, Brian Bradley, Matt Sims, Blake Murphy, Cody Laverdiere, and Gilbert Phillips. Honorary Pallbearers will be: O. B. Cotton, Freddie Griffith, Mike West, and Carl Shafer.
