Dr. Gary Phillips Obituary

 

Dr. Gary Phillips, 66, a physician who was devoted to his family, his patients, and his community, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on June 30, 2021, at the Big South Fork Medical Center in Oneida, Tennessee.  Dr. Phillips served as a physician and medical provider for many years at The Mountain Peoples Health Councils in Scott County, Tennessee. The son of the late W. T. (Bill) and Lucille Lewallen Phillips, Dr. Phillips was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Huntsville, Tennessee.


“Doc Gary”, as he was known to his many patients, graduated from Oneida High School in 1973 and from Berea College (Kentucky) in 1978. Graduating from Tufts University Medical School (Massachusetts) in 1982, Dr. Phillips served his internship and residency years at Moses Cone Hospital (University of North Carolina) in Greensboro.


Survivors include Dr. Phillips’s son, Christian (Dakota) Phillips and daughter, Robyn Phillips, and wife Daphne.  Leaving to cherish Dr. Phillips’s memory are his brothers, Thomas Phillips (Dorothy), William Paul Phillips, and his twin brother, Steven (Gina) Phillips, all of Oneida, and sister Lynda Phillips-Madson (Johan) of Cary, North Carolina.  
 

Special nieces and nephews include Johan Madson (Anne Hayes) of Greensboro, North Carolina, Marinda Madson Crochet (Brad) of Cary North Carolina, Lori Phillips-Jones (Phillip) of Oneida, Wade (Ginger) Phillips of Knoxville, Will (Sarah) Phillips of Sharps Chapel, Tennessee, Stephen and Jonathan (Kelsi Lay) Phillips of Oneida.
 

Special great nieces and nephews include Aven Jane and Gabe Crochet of North Carolina, Alex and Claire Jones of Oneida, Anderson and Amelia Phillips of Knoxville Tennessee, and Brennan, Sawyer, and Jainey Kate Phillips of Oneida, and Everette, Evelyn, and Ivan Phillips of Sharps Chapel, Tennessee.
 

Special cousins include Jack (Lee Ann) Phillips of Oneida, Shirley Ruth Griffith of Robbins, Patty (Kevin) Boland of Oneida, Jerry (Jill) Phillips of Colorado, and Wanda (Jack) Hengel of Huntsville Alabama.
 

Friends may visit with the family from 4-7 PM on Saturday, July 3, 2021, at the Bethlehem Baptist Church in Oneida, until the funeral service begins at 7:00.  Reverend Philip Kazee will officiate, and Will Phillips will present the obituary.  

 

The burial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday July 4, 2021, in the Hazel Valley Memorial Cemetery in Oneida.  Pallbearers will include:  Wade, Jonathan, and Stephen Phillips, Johan Madson, Brad Crochet, and Phillip Jones.

 

In Lieu-of-Flowers, the family requests that donations be made to:  Scott County Rescue Squad, 190 One Process Place, Oneida, TN   37841.
