Ewel 'Gary' Amburgey Obituary

Gary Amburgey (Ewel Gary Amburgey) unexpectedly died with his boots on Wednesday September 4, 2024.  Gary was born in Littcarr, Kentucky to Ewel and Janice Amburgey on November 12, 1948.

He was born a couple hundred years too late as he would've been right at home on the range with his rifle and horse.  Gary was a cowboy at heart and lived his life as such.  He had a passion for horses, offshore fishing in the Florida Keys, golfing, sports, relaxing on Norris Lake, off-roading and many other things.  He was the kind of man who would help anyone in need no matter who they were or where they were from.  He was an animal lover with the last two animals he had being dog and cat - both named Dog and Cat.  He had a few great friends in the resort, notably Ron Reisz.  Gary excelled at sports with multiple scholarship offers for football in high school.

Gary attended Eastern Kentucky University and found his calling in the restaurant industry.  He was married to Nancy Amburgey for 28 years and became a father to his son Matthew at the age of 34.  Through his commitment and hard work Gary was able to enjoy an early retirement in his 40's.  He was a man who wore many hats and lived a lot of life in his short 75 years.  Today you would've found him enjoying the peace and solitude of the Big South Fork.  This short summary on his life could never capture the kind of person he was or how many lives he impacted.

Gary was a son, father, grandfather, nephew, friend and more.  He would've been 76 this November.   We will forever be deeply saddened by his absence.   He is preceded in death by his father Ewel B. Amburgey and mother Janice Amburgey.  He is survived by his son Matthew Amburgey, Daughter-in-law Marie Amburgey, Grandson Levi Needham, Aunts: Jama Frazier, Jean Hampton and Jessie McGraner and many friends.

A celebration of life will be held on September 29, 2024 at the Wilderness Resorts in Oneida, TN at 12 p.m.  Join us to share a memory about Gary with a cowboy send off in one of the places he loved most.
