Miss Hazel Massengale peacefully passed away at her Oak Ridge home on Tuesday, October 29. She was a member at Riverview Missionary Baptist Church in Smokey Junction and an attendee at Smokey Creek and Nicks Creek.
Hazel was preceded in death by her father, Laford Massengale; mother, Birdie Ellen Jeffers Massengale; brothers, Clifford and Clifton Massengale; infant sister Elsie, sister, Delsie Chambers, infant sister Ardella, sisters, Rosie Jane Cook, Macil Murrell, and Aneda Thrasher.
She is survived by her sister, Myrtle Midge Carson of the Dutch Valley community; sister-in-law, Betty Massengale of Petros; nieces and nephews: Starlet, Pamela, Keith, Brian Mark, Deborah, Ellen, Crystal, Bill, Eric, James and numerous great nieces and great nephews, and other family members and friends.
After serving 35 years with the State of Tennessee, Hazel retired from the Probation and Parole, which had merged with DCS, becoming Children and Family Services. She spent ten years on her first job at the Knoxville Glove Company. Hazel was often fondly called Haydo, Hassy, Hay Hay, and Auntie H and will be dearly missed by all who knew her and loved her. As she said, she will always be a Miss.
Family and friends may visit with Hazel’s family on Friday, November 1, 2024 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. in the chapel of West-Murley Funeral Home in Oneida. Miss Massengale will lie in state on Saturday, November 2, 2024 at Riverview Missionary Baptist Church from 1 p.m. until time of the funeral service at 2 p.m. with Brother Keith Massengale officiating. Music will be provided by the Mason family.
Committal service will follow in the Riverview Cemetery in the Smokey Junction community. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
