Herbert Buford Lay Obituary

Mr. Herbert Buford Lay, born on March 13, 1940, was 82 when he passed peacefully at 4:42 a.m. on Aug 15, 2022, with his family at his side. Although Buford was born in Louisville, Kentucky to Rev. Hurstle and Opal Lay, he was raised in Oneida, TN where he attended Oneida city schools and met the love of his life, Wilma “Colleen” (West) Lay. Together they had three girls, 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren and 2 step great grandchildren.

Buford began shining shoes at 6 years old at his father’s barbershop. He eventually followed in his footsteps becoming a barber and owned Lay’s Barber Shop for 55 years. Besides attending Freewill Baptist Church in West Chester Ohio, Buford was an honorary member of White Rock Baptist in Huntsville, TN. Buford enjoyed playing golf in earlier years, but it was replaced by spending time traveling with family.

Buford was “Daddy” to Tonya Lay Sammons (Donald (Sam)) Sammons, Jacque Lay Anderson, and Kelly Lay Koller (Jerry Koller). He was “Papaw” to Jennifer Avenido (Jay Avenido) Adam Peace, Kim Sammons Hipshman, Travis Sammons, Heather Anderson, Chastin Anderson, Chelsea Perdue (Landon Perdue), Haley Koller, Jessy Koller and the great grand babies: Arden and Hayden Avenido, Jaxon Crummie, Leighton Perdue, Maverick and Camden Sammons. Buford was also survived by brothers Bill and Jerry Lay, sisters Ruth Ray Regina Wolf and met in heaven by sisters Christine Vockell, Wilma Crabtree, Dorinda Layman, and Yvonne Wright. He had numerous nieces and nephews.

A viewing will be held Aug 19 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Hodapp funeral home in West Chester, Ohio.

A Memorial Service will be held at White Rock Baptist in Huntsville TN on September 10th at 2:00 p.m. with an inurnment service following in the Daniel Memorial Cemetery.

Donations may be made in Buford’s name at the National Kidney Foundation.
