Vela Slaven Obituary

Vela Slaven, age 83 of Barbourville, KY passed away on Sunday, December 25, 2022, at the Barbourville Health and Rehab Center. Born in Scott County, TN on March 13, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Dock Lawson and Daisy Coker Lawson. She was a member of Hilltop Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her children, Jerry Lee Overton, Adam Glen Overton, Pharoah Overton, Helen Overton Sweet, Lola Overton, and Alice Rose; sisters, Violet Sexton, Anna Lee Sexton, Cora Lee Stephens, Rema Hughett, Mamie Harness, and Edna Lawson Lloyd; brothers, Robert Lawson, Arnold Lawson, Hobert Lawson, and two infant brothers.

Vela is survived by her children, Ella Rose and Ronald Slaven, 25 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Friends may visit with the Slaven family on Saturday, December 31, 2022 from 11 a.m. until time of the funeral service at 12 p.m. in the chapel of West-Murley Funeral Home with Bro. Brian Smith officiating. Music will be provided by Roger and Loretta Loyd.

Committal service will follow in the Black Creek Crossroads Cemetery in Robbins. Pallbearers will be: Aaron Ledford, Jacob Lawson, Josh Shoopman, Ronald Slaven, John Lay, and Joe Smith. Honorary pallbearer will be: Brian Smith.
